A Comparative Study of Variation of the Pterion of Human Skulls from 13th and 20th Century Anatolia International Journal of Morphology
Ilknur,Ari; Mustafa,Kafa Ilker; Sinan,Bakirci.
The pterion is a commonly used anthropologic and neurosurgical landmark defined as the junction of the sphenoid, temporal, parietal and frontal bones. It is commonly classified into four types based on sutural pattern: sphenoparietal, in which the sphenoid and parietal bones are in direct contact; frontotemporal, in which the frontal and temporal bones are in direct contact; stellate, in which all four bones come into contact at a point; and epipteric, in which a small sutural bone is found between the parietal bone and the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. In the present study, 44 Anatolian skulls from two different eras, Byzantine (13th century) and contemporary (20th century), were investigated for morphology and location of the pterion. Sphenoparietal...

Conservation Biology and Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Integrating Academic Disciplines for Better Conservation Practice Ecology and Society
Drew, Joshua A; Boston University Marine Program; jdrew@bu.edu; Henne, Adam P; Anthropology Department - University of Georgia; ahenne@uga.edu.
Conservation biology and environmental anthropology are disciplines that are both concerned with the identification and preservation of diversity, in one case biological and in the other cultural. Both conservation biology and the study of traditional ecoloigcal knowledge function at the nexus of the social and natural worlds, yet historically there have been major impediments to integrating the two. Here we identify linguistic, cultural, and epistemological barriers between the two disciplines. We argue that the two disciplines are uniquely positioned to inform each other and to provide critical insights and new perspectives on the way these sciences are practiced. We conclude by synthesizing common themes found in conservation success stories, and by...

First Premolar Morphometry: A Study in 54 Cases International Journal of Morphology
Fuentes F,Ramón; Borie E,Eduardo; Bustos M,Luis; Tomas M,David.
First lower premolars are the teeth with greater variations following third molars. Fifty four first premolars extracted by orthodontic indication from patients in Temuco, Chile, were studied and classified by age, sex and maxillar and mandible location. The following parameters were measured: vestibular-palatine diameter (VP), mesiodistal (MD) diameter, coronary height (C-O), root length and total length. The data were statistically analyzed and tabulated. The results exhibited that first upper premolars showed higher values in the VP diameter and root length compared with the lower, noting significant differences. Further, male sex showed higher values on most measures compared with females, except in root length. Finally a difference in root length was...

How to Maintain Domesticity of Usages in Small Rural Forests? Lessons from Forest Management Continuity through a French Case Study Ecology and Society
Sourdril, Anne; CNRS / UMR 7533 Ladyss; anne.sourdril@u-paris10.fr; Andrieu, Emilie; INRA / UMR 1201 Dynafor; emilie.andrieu@toulouse.inra.fr; Cabanettes, Alain; INRA / UMR 1201 Dynafor; alain.cabanettes@toulouse.inra.fr; Elyakime, Bernard; INRA / UMR 1201 Dynafor; bernard.elyakime@toulouse.inra.fr; Ladet, Sylvie; INRA / UMR 1201 Dynafor; sylvie.ladet@toulouse.inra.fr.
The management of small private forests in the Western World has been under threat owing to rural and agricultural transformations since the Second World War. The actions put in place to preserve those forests are hard to implement because the forests are managed essentially in an unofficial way that is not clearly understood. Through multidisciplinary approaches, our aims were to understand local forest management processes, to assess the continuities and discontinuities of usages and practices in the Coteaux de Gascogne area of France, and to propose guidelines for future forest management. Forest management is shaped by a traditional but unrecognized social system called the house-centered system, which has contributed to a high degree of domesticity...

Law for Country: the Structure of Warlpiri Ecological Knowledge and Its Application to Natural Resource Management and Ecosystem Stewardship Ecology and Society
Holmes, Miles C. C.; Principal Consultant Beit Holmes and Associates; University of Queensland; Milesholmes@internode.on.net; Jampijinpa, Wanta (Stephen Patrick); Australian National University; wanta.jampijinpa@anu.edu.au.
Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK) is deeply encoded in social processes. Our research shows that from an Indigenous perspective, IEK is a way of living whose core aim is to sustain the healthy functioning of people and country through relationships of reciprocity. However, IEK is often portrayed more prosaically as a body of knowledge about the environment. We introduce a framework, called ngurra-kurlu, that enables appreciation of indigenous perspectives on IEK. The framework was identified from the collaborative work of the authors with Warlpiri aboriginal elders in the Tanami Desert region of central Australia. Ngurra-kurlu facilitates cross-cultural understanding by distilling, from a complex cultural system, the five distinct conceptual categories...

Sagittal Suture of the Human Cranium and the Time of Closing International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Janice Chaim; Wafae,Gabriela Cavallini; Coelho,Daniela de Paula; Wafae,Nader; Coelho,Viviane de Assis; Pereira,Eduardo; Ruiz,Cristiane Regina.
The observation of the stage of ossification of the sagittal suture has been adopted as possible approach of age evaluation in anthropology and legal medicine, as area of cranial pathologies: craniosynostosis and scaphocephaly and as diagnosis resource in tomographies. Regarding it, we found many controversies in the specialized literature, thus we decided to accomplish this research with the following objectives: to examine the ossification of the external surface of the sagittal suture, observing eventual differences due to age, sex and ethnic group. Our material consists of 88 dry craniums of variable ages, both sexes belonging to the ethnic groups: white and black. In that material we observed that: with progression of age, the relation between age and...

Social-ecological systems, social diversity, and power: insights from anthropology and political ecology Ecology and Society
Fabinyi, Michael; Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University; michael.fabinyi@jcu.edu.au; Evans, Louisa; Geography, College of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Exeter; louisa.evans@exeter.ac.uk; Foale, Simon J; Department of Anthropology, Archaeology and Sociology, James Cook University; simon.foale@jcu.edu.au.
A social-ecological system (SES) framework increasingly underpins the “resilience paradigm.” As with all models, the SES comes with particular biases. We explore these key biases. We critically examine how the SES resilience literature has attempted to define and analyze the social arena. We argue that much SES literature defines people’s interests and livelihoods as concerned primarily with the environment, and thereby underplays the role of other motivations and social institutions. We also highlight the SES resilience literature’s focus on institutions and organized social units, which misses key aspects of social diversity and power. Our key premise is the importance of inter- and multi-disciplinary perspectives....

The Morphometric Analysis of Crista Phallica in Identification of Sexes International Journal of Morphology
Ulucam,Enis; Alicioglu,Banu; Cikmaz,Selman; Yilmaz,Ali; Sut,Necdet.
Crista phallica (CP) is used to determine sex in anthropology and criminal forensic medicine; however, it does not exist in anatomic and radiological terminology. The purpose of this retrospective study is morphometric analysis of the CP. We studied radiographs displaying several different clinical indications from patients whose bone maturation were fully complete. The crista phallica located on both sides of the medial portion of ischiopubic ramus (IPR) were localized and their peak points were determined. The distance from these peak points to the inner cortex of IPRs were measured, as well as the angles between the tangents passing the peak points from both sides. We determined the distance of the IPR (DIPR) for males and females sequentially as...
